This site is an extension of the StartUP! program workshops. It is a community hub made up of new and experienced educators that provide ongoing support for new teachers in British Columbia. It is free to join, and does not require participation in the StartUP! workshops (although they are highly recommended!).
The StartUP! Program was developed by Ray Myrtle. Ray is a former teacher in the Burnaby School District and was president of the Provincial Intermediate Teacher’s Association (now called myPITA) for 8 years. During his time as the president of myPITA, the program was developed to provide curriculum based support for early career teachers through a series of workshops and web based resources. More than 1500 early career teachers have participated in the StartUP! program and have recommended it.
The concept was developed in 2006 and futher developed with a grant from the Ministry of Education in 2008. The program has also had financial support from BCTF local Pro D committees in Abbotsford, Delta, Burnaby, Surrey, Kelowna, Kamloops and Provincial Specialists Associations: myPITA, Rural Schools and BCATML.
The current goals of the program are:
We believe that every new teacher should have several years of curriculum based support that complements and coordinates with mentoring and other in-school and district based supports.
